iPhone 7 will have 3.5mm headset jack after all, latest leak says
So far almost every rumor that's talked about the upcoming iPhone 7 has mentioned that Apple's next smartphone will get rid of the 3.5mm headset jack, instead relying on the Lightning port for audio transmission. This has been repeated so many times that by now it's pretty much accepted as fact - but that may not have been wise, as it turns out.
Today a leaked shot purportedly showing the iPhone 7's innards comes to contradict all of those previous reports. That's because the part shown does in fact feature the connection to the 3.5mm headset jack, even if overall it looks pretty different to what's been used for the iPhone 6s.
And that in itself raises some questions about the (unverifiable) authenticity of this leak. Needless to say then, don't take this for granted just yet. Still, if this part does belong to the iPhone 7, then the rumors of the headset jack's demise have been false.
The Apple iPhone 7 could be waterproof and it might sport a touch home button. Its antenna lines are apparently going to be redesigned for a more streamlined look. The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are due to be outed at Apple's annual fall event.

Small Display Bedevils Some Apple Watch Apps
The 3,500 apps available for the Apple Watch show the device’s promise and pitfalls.
Nobody needs an Apple Watch, or any kind of smart watch, really; we haven’t quite figured out what to do with these things yet, beyond activity tracking and replicating the alerts you already get on your smartphone. But that isn’t stopping app makers from trying to figure out more things to do with wrist-worn gadgets. There are more than 3,500 apps available for the Apple Watch, which started selling this month from Apple’s website (though if you order now, you probably won’t get one until June).
Lately I’ve been getting to know the Apple Watch that I have to review by playing around with a handful of these apps. I’m trying to determine which may make the Apple Watch truly useful and which could just make it irritating.
So far, I’ve found that the apps that make the most sense tend to be those that take advantage of the watch’s proximity to your body, don’t require much time and attention, and don’t crowd its tiny display with unnecessary information. Apps that are more annoying than awesome try to cram in too many features, share content that isn’t really suited to being viewed on your wrist, or simply don’t give you enough information.
Apps That Make Sense
Apple Pay: I never understood why I’d want to pay for things with my smartphone, since it still requires pulling something out of my pocket and it’s really not hard to swipe a credit card. But paying with the gadget that’s already on my wrist? Sure, I can imagine that being useful, and Apple Pay on the Apple Watch is smartly done.
The idea behind it is pretty simple: to pay for things in stores that accept Apple Pay, you double-click the oblong button on the side of the Apple Watch, which you hold up to the store’s credit card reader.
Sure, you have to first approve your credit card for use through the Apple Watch app on your iPhone. And you have to be shopping at a store that accepts Apple Pay (such as Walgreens, Sephora, or Whole Foods).
The second time, though, I got it right, buying coffees and snacks at a Panera Bread. Not only could I avoid taking out a credit card, but I was able to leave my bulky wallet back at the office.
Yelp: The review service works well on the Apple Watch because it’s simple on the surface but contains a lot of information down below that you can get to if you need it.
Opening it up, you’ll see icons for restaurants, bars, coffee shops, and places that are popular and new. Tap on one of the icons and you get a list of 10 places along with vital stats for each (its distance from your location, price range, star rating, cuisine). If one of the places—a nearby bar, for instance—is closed at the moment, you’ll also see how long it will be until it opens today.
Tap on a result and you’ll get more precise information, like the exact location, hours, and some review highlights. You can tap a tiny map to get turn-by-turn directions, and if you want even more information you can tap on a review and read it on the watch’s screen. Yes, there’s a lot here, but it’s cleverly hidden; you can get a lot out of the app with just two taps and a turn of the watch’s so-called digital crown.
Clear: I make lots of lists, especially of the to-do and grocery varieties. For a while, I used a pretty, simple iPhone app called Clear, but the awkwardness of trying to maneuver a shopping cart while swiping my smartphone screen to delete items from the list made me switch back to handwritten lists I could crumple in my hand.
No more, thanks to Clear for the Apple Watch, which I quickly became enamored of during a trip to my local Safeway. It made it easy to see what I had to buy for dinner that night and then quickly tick it off my list.
The Clear app for the watch is pretty simple. Assuming you already have the app on your iPhone, you’ll see all the lists you’ve made, and while you can’t make new lists (a good limit, I think), you can add new items to any list by pressing a finger firmly on the name of the list, or any item within the list, and then dictating what you want.
You mark tasks as completed by tapping a little circle next to each item, and once they’re all completed the list will disappear from the Apple Watch. It will still exist on the iPhone, with a strike through each item, which is useful for things like recurring grocery lists.
Apps That Miss the Mark
Amazon: The Amazon app for the Apple Watch makes sense in theory. I’m a big comparison shopper, and I frequently pull out my smartphone in stores to see prices on Amazon. Simply talking to the Apple Watch to search for, say, a bottle of blue Essie nail polish and then buying it with a click on its tiny product page, all on my wrist, sounded like something that could be useful at times.
In reality, though, the Apple Watch isn’t yet good enough at understanding the strange words and brand names that often identify specific products. I’m not sure if it’s a voice recognition issue, a microphone issue, or both, but when I asked the Amazon app to find things like “Mr. Beams closet light” or “Essie nail polish ‘In the Cab-Ana,’” I ended up nearly shouting at my wrist in the corner of Walgreens, repeating these product names like strange incantations.
The few times it did understand me—like when I searched for “Stanley 16-foot tape measure”—the app showed me five different products in its search results, each accompanied by some basic information. Tapping a result yielded the full item name, its Amazon rating, and buttons to buy it or save it to a wish list with a tap (I had previously set up one-click ordering on my iPhone). But with so little information in the description, I was afraid of getting the wrong one, so I turned to my laptop to actually make the purchase.
Instagram: Instagram images often seem too small on my iPhone’s screen, so looking at the nine latest updates to my Instagram feed on a much smaller display strapped to my wrist was even less appealing.
In that sense, then, the Instagram app for the Apple Watch didn’t disappoint: it was about as annoying as I thought it would be.
It looks simple enough on the surface, presenting you with icons to see the feed of your friends’ photos, or likes and comments people have made on yours.
Images looked crisp on the Apple Watch’s display, but so minuscule I couldn’t always figure out what was going on at a glance. If you tap on a picture, you can see the caption and any likes and comments. Further tapping is required to see who liked the photo and who said what, and to reply to a photo by choosing from a series of 12 emoji (smiley faces, various hand gestures, and, thankfully, the smiling poop).
It’s possible to see user profiles in the app, but they’re painful to look at: just a tiny, circular profile photo atop a square containing that user’s four most recent photos. Yep—they’re even smaller than what you see in the app’s photo feed.
Twitter: Twitter is meant for short interactions, so it seems like a natural fit for the Apple Watch’s small display. Unfortunately, its first iteration doesn’t show quite enough information to make it useful.
Some interactions are easy: you can retweet and mark favorite tweets with just a tap, and respond (by dictating to the watch or adding an emoji).
But the Apple Watch version of the Twitter timeline only shows you the five most recent tweets from people you follow. If you want to see more, you have to scroll down and tap “More,” over and over, until you are sated. And while you’ll get a notification when you’re mentioned on Twitter, there’s no way to view that activity by just looking in the app.
Apple and IBM’s Plan to Make Smarter Health-Tracking iPhone Apps
Apple helped IBM create a service that can analyze medical data collected by iPhone apps, and could deliver personalized health advice.
Apple’s vision for tracking your health via an iPhone is expanding.Some hospitals and electronic medical records companies have already begun using an Apple software platform called HealthKit to add extra detail to patient files. For example, patients can opt to automatically share readings from a home blood glucose monitor with their provider using the software. Apple and IBM are now working together to help health-care providers make sense of that data, and to do things like automatically offer advice to patients.
IBM has created a new online service, called Watson Health Cloud, designed to analyze data funneled through HealthKit. It is intended to help companies and researchers find medically useful patterns in data collected via Apple’s platform, and to build tools that offer personalized medical advice based on an individual’s HealthKit data.
One way that apps built on IBM’s new service could do that is by comparing data from an individual’s phone against piles of anonymized records from previous patients, says Steve Gold, a vice president in IBM’s Watson Group. “An app could tell me what actions I can take, personalized to my age, past conditions, and activity,” says Gold. “For example, ‘We know that people like you need to make sure to take a baby aspirin a day or eat less red meat.’ ”
Last week, IBM announced it had acquired a company, Explorys, which has a database of 50 million medical records that it uses to search for revealing patterns in patient care (see “The Health-Care Company IBM Needed”). IBM could also help health-care providers and researchers combine HealthKit data with information from genetic tests, says Gold. HealthKit does not yet handle genetic data, but IBM’s platform does. The company is also an investor in the genetic-testing company Pathway Genomics.
No Apple executive was available for comment in time for publication.
Apple’s HealthKit was announced in June 2014, and rolled out to iPhones with an update to Apple’s mobile operating system in September of that year. It creates a kind of information vault on a person’s iPhone that collates health data from a person’s Apple gadgets as well as other apps and medical devices, such as blood glucose monitors (see “Why Apple Wants to Help You Track Your Health”).
IBM plans to use its platform and HealthKit to offer apps for companies wishing to provide their employees with health advice. This is part of a deal IBM struck last year to sell Apple’s hardware, software, and compatible apps to businesses.
The collaboration with IBM is Apple’s first publicly announced HealthKit partnership focused purely on analyzing HealthKit data. The Watson Health Cloud is also designed to be compatible with ResearchKit, an Apple software platform that lets medical researchers collect data via iPhones.
Compatibility with HealthKit and ResearchKit is a major selling point for the Watson Health Cloud, but it is designed to work with any source of data. Johnson & Johnson is using IBM’s service to build an app that acts as a personal coach to help people prepare for and recover from joint replacement surgery, for example, by tracking how many steps they take each day.
Marina Sirota, an assistant professor at the University of California, San Francisco, Institute for Computational Health, agrees that combining outside data sources with HealthKit, and providing automated analysis, could be very powerful. For example, it might uncover subgroups among people with the same condition who respond differently to the same treatment. “This data will allow us to understand disease better,” says Sirota.
However, researchers and doctors are only just starting to explore the usefulness of this kind of data, says Sirota. “We’ll have to start getting apps collecting data in different ways, and then start the research and analysis, which will inform development of new apps that could help patients,” she says.
The Watson Health Cloud is the main product of a new, 2,000-person business unit at IBM called Watson Health. Although named for the Watson question-answering software developed to compete on the game show Jeopardy!, not all of the unit’s offerings are based on that technology.
Apple Has Plans for Your DNA
The iPhone could become a new tool in genetic studies.
Of all the rumors ever to swirl around the world’s most valuable company, this may be the first that could involve spitting in a plastic cup.
Apple is collaborating with U.S. researchers to help launch apps that would offer some iPhone owners the chance to get their DNA tested, many of them for the first time, according to people familiar with the plans.The apps are based on ResearchKit, a software platform Apple introduced in March that helps hospitals or scientists run medical studies on iPhones by collecting data from the devices’ sensors or through surveys.
The first five ResearchKit apps, including one called mPower that tracks symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, quickly recruited thousands of participants in a few days, demonstrating the reach of Apple’s platform.
“Apple launched ResearchKit and got a fantastic response. The obvious next thing is to collect DNA,” says Gholson Lyon, a geneticist at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, who isn’t involved with the studies.
Nudging iPhone owners to submit DNA samples to researchers would thrust Apple’s devices into the center of a widening battle for genetic information. Universities, large technology companies like Google (see “Google Wants to Store Your Genome”), direct-to-consumer labs, and even the U.S. government (see “U.S. to Develop DNA Study of One Million People”) are all trying to amass mega-databases of gene information to uncover clues about the causes of disease (see “Internet of DNA”).
In two initial studies planned, Apple isn’t going to directly collect or test DNA itself. That will be done by academic partners. The data would be maintained by scientists in a computing cloud, but certain findings could appear directly on consumers’ iPhones as well. Eventually, it’s even possible consumers might swipe to share “my genes” as easily as they do their location.
An Apple spokeswoman declined to comment. But one person with knowledge of the plans said the company’s eventual aim is to “enable the individual to show and share” DNA information with different recipients, including organizers of scientific studies. This person, like others with knowledge of the research, spoke on condition of anonymity because of the company’s insistence on secrecy.
One of these people said the DNA-app studies could still be cancelled, but another said Apple wants the apps ready for the company’s worldwide developers’ conference, to be held in June in San Francisco.
Sophisticated data
Starting last year, Apple began taking steps to make its devices indispensable for “digital health.” Its latest version of the iOS operating system includes an app called Health, which has fields for more than 70 types of health data—everything from your weight to how many milligrams of manganese you eat (as yet, there’s no field for your genome). Apple also entered a partnership with IBM to develop health apps for nurses and hospitals, as well as to mine medical data.
Now Apple is closely involved in shaping initial studies that will collect DNA. One, planned by the University of California, San Francisco, would study causes of premature birth by combining gene tests with other data collected on the phones of expectant mothers. A different study would be led by Mount Sinai Hospital in New York.
Atul Butte, leader of the UCSF study and head of the Institute for Computational Health Sciences, said he could not comment on Apple’s involvement. “The first five [ResearchKit] studies have been great and are showing how fast Apple can recruit. I and many others are looking at types of trials that are more sophisticated,” Butte says. Noting that the genetic causes of premature birth aren’t well understood, he says, “I look forward to the day when we can get more sophisticated data than activity, like DNA or clinical data.”
To join one of the studies, a person would agree to have a gene test carried out—for instance, by returning a “spit kit” to a laboratory approved by Apple. The first such labs are said to be the advanced gene-sequencing centers operated by UCSF and Mount Sinai.
The planned DNA studies would look at 100 or fewer medically important disease genes (known as a “gene panel”), not a person’s entire genome. These targeted tests, if done at large scale, would not cost more than a few hundred dollars each.
Like the ResearchKit apps released so far, the studies would be approved by Apple and by an institutional review board, a type of oversight body that advises researchers on studies involving volunteers.
The ResearchKit program has been spearheaded by Stephen Friend, a onetime pharmaceutical company executive and now the head of Sage Bionetworks, a nonprofit that advocates for open scientific research. Friend’s vision for a data “commons” in which study subjects are active participants in scientific research was enthusiastically embraced by Apple starting in 2013. Friend, whom Apple describes as a medical technology advisor, declined an interview request through an assistant.

Apple iOS 8.1.3 update will reportedly arrive this week
According to a new report, Apple will release iOS
8.1.3 to devices worldwide this week. Cupertino
has already seeded iOS 8.1.3 build 12B460 to a
number of retail employees for testing.
Apple has not tested upcoming iOS builds with
retail employees in the past. There is no word on
the changes that iOS 8.1.3 will bring for the time
being. We are betting on minor improvements and
bug fixes.
The Cupertino giant released iOS 8.1.2 a month
ago. The build addressed issues with ringtones
purchased through the iTunes Store.

THE Apple iPad mini 2
Physical Design and WirelessThe mini 2 $249.99 at eBay is
superficially identical to the original mini. If you look really
closely, you'll find that it's ever so slightly thicker (.01-inch) and
ever so slightly heavier (by less than an ounce) to accommodate a larger
battery for the new high-res screen. At 7.87 by 5.3 by 0.29 inches
(HWD) and 11.68 ounces, it'll still fit in old iPad mini cases.
The difference between the mini and the Air is really
about size and price, not weight. I just held both tablets in my hands,
and now that the Air is only four ounces more, the weight difference
between the two tablets doesn't feel meaningful.
The mini 2 still has the 4:3 aspect ratio, which makes it
compatible with iPad apps, but noticeably thicker—and less usable
one-handed—than the competing Samsung Galaxy Tab S and the Nvidia Shield Tablet$299.00 at Amazon.
Its metal-and-glass construction is tightly elegant, with a shiny
chamfered edge around the corner. The narrow side bezel echoes the iPad
Air's, and like the Air, it comes in silver and space gray.
The 7.9-inch, 2,048-by-1,536-pixel IPS LCD touch screen is
bright and sharp. It's the exact same resolution as the iPad Air, but
in a higher pixel density—324ppi to the Air's 253, almost the same
density as the iPhone 5s$539.95 at Amazon.
All of the screen elements are slightly smaller than they are on the
Air, something you notice in productivity apps with lots of tiny screen
elements like iPhoto. They're still usable, but you need slightly
sharper eyes and fingers than you do on the big iPad.
The mini comes in a dual-band, 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi
version and a universal cellular version that works with all U.S.
carriers. Every mini is unlocked, even if it comes with a SIM card
installed, Apple told me. Wi-Fi performance was good, but not quite as
good as the iPad Air. Testing against a Meraki MR16$464.33 at Amazon router
through a metal door, I saw 13-14Mbps down on the mini but 18-19Mbps
down on the Air. Bluetooth 4.0 is also on board; the cellular version,
but not the Wi-Fi-only version, has GPS.
Battery life was 6 hours, 8 minutes playing video with the
screen set to max brightness. That's just about the same as the iPad
Air, but far short of the Galaxy Tab S.
Performance and MultimediaThe iPad
mini has a 1.3GHz Apple A7 processor, the same speed as the iPhone 5s
and slightly slower than the Air's 1.4GHz. It scored slightly slower on
the Geekbench and Sunspider benchmarks than the Air did, but matched the
Air's result on the Browsermark browser test and on the GFXBench
graphics test. Although all the current, leading Android tablets outpace
the iPad mini 2 (and for that matter, the mini 3) on processor tests,
the iPads' Safari browser showed superior results on the browser tests,
and it beat the Editors' Choice Samsung Galaxy Tab S (but not the latest
Nvidia and Google tablets) on graphics tests.
There's no iPad mini version with the much faster A8X
processor that you find in the iPad Air 2. But accelerometer-based games
like Asphalt 8: Airborne and Need for Speed: Most Wanted are actually
more playable here than on the Air, because it's easier to handle and
tilt the smaller device. iPhoto and iMovie also work smoothly.
The M7 motion coprocessor also makes an appearance here.
Apple showed me how diary app Day One, for instance, can monitor how
much you walk or travel with the iPad in your bag.
iOS is still a simple grid of icons that is passionately
focused on touch. And iCloud remains an important component to the OS,
especially for backing up your data. Read our in-depth iOS 8 review for the full details.
The mini's 5-megapixel main camera and 1.2-megapixel front
camera are the same as the original iPad Air's. I noticed that when
shooting side by side, the big iPad sometimes selected slightly higher
ISOs—64 as opposed to 50, 500 as opposed to 400—making the big iPad's
photos a little brighter, but just a touch noisier. The HDR mode also
still doesn't do much; a bright sky will blow out in any image. I'm
really splitting hairs here, though. These are very good cameras, for a
tablet.
Like the Air, the mini 2 has a pair of bottom-ported
speakers. While the speaker grilles are smaller than the Air's, they
generated almost exactly the same volume: 86 or 87 decibels at six
inches. Also like on other iPads, if you want to play your video on a
TV, you can use a $49 HDMI adapter cable or Apple's proprietary wireless
streaming system, AirPlay.
The mini 2 now only comes in 16 and 32GB models, for $299
and $349. Adding LTE for any of the four major carriers costs $130
extra. Since there's no memory card slot, you may find 16GB limiting if
you download even a few movies or large video games.
Comparisons and ConclusionsLet's dispatch the iPad mini 3$377.99 at Amazon
first. It costs $100 more and all you get out of it is Touch ID. No, we
don't understand it either. But the iPad mini 2 is by far Apple's best
tablet value at the moment—all the iPad app goodness you want, at a price $100 lower than most iPads usually cost.
That makes the iPad mini competitive with small-scale
Android tablets as well. And it puts me in the unusual position of
recommending a more expensive Android tablet as our Editors'
Choice, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4. I'm just so entranced by the
Galaxy Tab's vibrant screen and expandability that I think it's worth
the extra C-note.
At the $299 level, I can't think of
anything else that quite matches this tablet right now. The mini 2's top
Android-powered competitor is probably Nvidia's Shield Tablet, which
has a powerful processor, but falls way behind the mini on game
availability, screen quality and build quality. If you're interested
primarily in productivity, take a close look at the Asus VivoTab Note 8£199.97 at Laptops Direct, which runs real Microsoft Windows, with all of its pro apps and all of its complexity and virus-susceptibility.
Our favorite Apple tablet is still the iPad Air 2$499.99 at Best Buy,
which has the newer A8X processor for the best possible graphics and
gaming experience. But if you find yourself with $300 in your pocket and
you want to get in on the iOS app universe, the iPad mini 2 is a
terrific buy.

Apple MacBook Pro 15-Inch Retina Display (2014)
The 15.6-inch IPS display has a
2,800-by-1,800 resolution, which is higher than the 2,560-by-1,440 on
the Editors' Choice high-end ultrabook, the Toshiba Kirabook 13 i7s Touch$1,499.99 at Toshiba, but lower than the 4K UHD 3,840-by-2,160 screen on the Toshiba Satellite P50T-BST2N01. OS X Mavericks
automatically scales the screen so everything is crisp, as long as
you're using applications that have been updated for the Retina display.
For example, 1080p and 720p HD YouTube videos play back in full
resolution in Safari and Chrome without having to zoom the video out to
full screen. On-screen elements, like menu bars and windows,
automatically scale to a virtual 1,440-by-900 resolution for purposes of
positioning, though the images and videos within these windows appear
at full resolution. Text is scaled so it looks ultra smooth on the
Retina display. Contrast this with the Kirabook 13 i7s Touch and
Satellite P50T-BST2N01, where you may have to adjust the scaling
repeatedly if menu text looks too small or if images don't look right.
It's not always awesome on the Mac, however. If you're using an older
version of a program (like Microsoft Office for Mac 2008, for example),
text and images may not scale right and there will be a corresponding
reduction in quality. The only unavoidable nit is that the system still
doesn't have a matte screen option for folks that can't stand glossy
glass.
The $1,999 base model of the 15-inch MacBook Pro comes with 16GB of
system memory and a 256GB Flash Storage module (akin to an SSD on other
notebooks). The system's memory isn't upgradable, but the Flash Storage
is technically upgradable. We say technically because you'll have to
source a compatible PCIe Flash Storage module and purchase a special P5
pentalobe screwdriver to handle the specialized screws on the bottom lid
of the laptop. Ultimately, it's not otherwise upgradeable, but then
again neither are most notebooks and ultrabooks these days. In addition
to OS X 10.9 Mavericks, the MacBook Pro 15-inch comes preloaded with
Keynote, Numbers, and Pages (iWork), as well as GarageBand, iBooks,
iMovie, iPhoto, and iTunes (iLife). With iWork, you should be able to
manage schoolwork and basic business work without having to buy
Microsoft Office. If you discount free solutions like Google Docs, this
gives the MacBook Pro a leg up on Windows laptops, which only come with
trial versions of Office. The system comes with a one-year warranty with
90 days of phone support.
Performance
The $1,999 base model we tested comes with an Intel Core i7-4770HQ
processor with integrated Intel Iris Pro 5200 graphics. Add the
performance from the 16GB of memory and speedy PCIe-based Flash Storage,
and you'll likely never want for power. Multimedia scores were
excellent: 1 minute, 17 seconds on the Handbrake video test (which
matches the Dell Precision M2800 workstation in the lead of this group),
and 3:25 on the Adobe Photoshop CS6 test, five seconds faster than the
second place Toshiba Satellite P50T-BST2N01.
Intel's Iris Pro graphics is on board, and it's essentially the
high performance version of Intel HD Graphics. Performance has improved
to the point that Apple chose to use Iris Pro graphics on its base model
instead of the mid-level discrete graphics found in older iterations of
the 15-inch MacBook Pro. The laptop pulled some of the fastest frame
rates on our 3D gaming tests (Heaven 22 fps; Valley 23 fps) at the
medium quality settings. This is at least 10 fps higher than other
Windows laptops with integrated Intel graphics. Only the systems with
discrete workstation graphics like the Precision M2800 and Satellite
P50T-BST2N01 had faster 3D performance. If you need a boost, the $2,499
version of the MacBook Pro 15-inch comes with Nvidia GeForce GT 750
graphics and a speedier Core i7 processor.
The latest model gained 33 minutes on our
battery rundown test over its previous iteration (8:55 vs. 8:22).
But competitive systems like the Dell XPS 13 Touch (9:31) and the Samsung ATIV Book 9 2014 EditionBest Price at Amazon
(11:26) lasted even longer. In addition, the Acer Aspire S7-392-5410

is still our recommendation if you're willing to trade screen size for
portability. That said, if you're a Mac power user upgrading from a
pre-Retina-Display MacBook Pro (or MacBook Air), this laptop
